The Apprehensions

On show in 15 Artists at Redcliffe Art Gallery 15 August - 7 November 2026

The Apprehensions presents a collection of scenes from Midsomer Murders episodes at the point where the murderer is being apprehended. Viewing this arguably light subject through nods to dramatic religious and history painting formats, the series looks at formulaic storytelling patterns and how narratives are constructed. Why does the expected episode formula of this beloved TV show, grounded in the English idyll, equate to cosiness and safety for many viewers even when the subject is fundamentally violent? Who are the recurring figures of moral authority within these stories? And do the clear-cut depictions of justice, right and wrong, and binaries of light and dark remain relevant here and now?
